Here’s all of this week’s essential reading for England supporters.

Aston Villa gaffer Dean Smith is, unsurprisingly, a big Jack Grealish fan. Via Nick Mashiter, Smith is predicting - like us - that his captain will soon be an England international.

As you’d expect there was a similar view from Brendan Rodgers about Leicester City’s James Maddison, who can’t seem to stay out of the spotlight at the moment, and indeed couldn’t stay out of the England squad either.

Another player looking to step back into the breach was Harry Winks - named in the squad this week - who missed out on the UEFA Nations League finals because of injury, but has started the new season fully fit.

Jordan Henderson is in, of course, and FourFourTwo‘s Peter Ndahiro pays tribute to Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard replacement and an English midfielder who skewers the stereotypes about what and English midfielder can be.

One of the four uncapped players in the squad is Aston Villa centre back Tyrone Mings. The Guardian has a very fine telling of his story from Stuart James. From Yate Town to Wembley - and what a player he is.

Kyle Walker didn’t make the cut but Gareth Southgate hasn’t closed the door. His selection, he says, is more about creating a pathway for the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while Kieran Trippier offers cover. Walker, he reckons, will value the rest.

Finally, and not in the least bit England-related, we have this week’s cartoon by the one and only David Squires, whose pen drips with righteous anger over the demise of Bury and the tolerance of shitehawks in football.
