Ruben Loftus-Cheek injured in Chelsea friendly

Chelsea face Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League Final in Baku at the end of this month and they might be doing so without England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The Blues went to Boston and beat New England Revolution - freshly coached and managed by Bruce Arena - in a benefit match in opposition to anti-semitism.

Chelsea’s 3-0 win came courtesy of a Ross Barkley brace. So that’s nice.

But, according to The Independent Loftus-Cheek “appeared to catch his foot in the uneven surface and twisted awkwardly” and was substituted mid-way through the second half at the Revs’ Gillette Stadium, leaving on crutches.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri wasn’t sure about the timing of the event despite its bridging the gap between the end of the Premier League season and the Europa League final.

He is now expected to be without Loftus-Cheek’s services in Baku, and the concern will extend to England ahead of their UEFA Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands.

Gareth Southgate names his squad today.

Update:
It has now been confirmed that Loftus-Cheek ruptured his Achilles tendon in Boston. We wish him an uncomplicated recovery.
