Kieran Trippier swaps Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid

England right back Kieran Trippier has signed for Atletico Madrid in a deal reportedly worth £20m plus add-ons.

Trippier leaves Tottenham Hotspur four years after moving from Burnley, making Spurs a tidy profit in the process - such is the transfer market this summer.

Trippier was one of England’s most effective players in the run to the semi-final of FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia but his club form in the 2018/19 season, combined with the further emergence of some serious competition in his position, might have already played him out of the squad.

At the age of 28 that might well prove a permanent arrangement as Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold take over for the national team.

With that in mind it’s an exciting move all round. Spurs get a wad of cash for a player who should himself benefit from a fresh start in the new season. Atleti, meanwhile, get a full back with UEFA Champions League experience under his belt.

Whether Trippier’s new employment situation will have an impact on his England prospects is doubtful, I’d argue, but if a change is as good as a rest then a switch to a massive club on the continent will do him just fine.
